Falcons sign Marcus Mariota to two-year deal

Updated: Mar 23

The Falcons signed former Raiders quarterback Marcus Mariota to a two-year deal, the team announced on Friday. The move comes after Atlanta traded Matt Ryan to the Colts for a third-round pick.

After failing to land Deshaun Watson last week, A lot of people figured it was time to let Matt Ryan go. After pushing back his $7.5M signing bonus back to Tuesday, Ryan was looking for a new home but the right one. Colts being a contender without a QB, Ryan fits perfect with his new franchise.

Mariota spent the last two seasons serving as a backup to Vegas starting quarterback Derek Carr. Prior to joining the Raiders, Mariota spent five seasons with the Titans, the franchise that selected him in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Current Falcons coach Arthur Smith was an assistant coach with the Titans for Mariota’s entire tenure, including serving as offensive coordinator in 2019.

The former Oregon standout has completed 62.8 percent of his career passes for 13,437 yards and 77 touchdown passes, but he has consistently been hampered by injuries throughout his time in the NFL.
